The instrument was donated anonymously to The Rainbow Centre so we are unaware of it's actual provenance, the details above are the findings from our research. This would make a wonderful addition to any music collection and bring much musical and aesthetic pleasure to it's owner. The enharmonic system was an early Besson rival to the Blaikley system used by Boosey and Hawkes.

The Euphonium was lot 146 and sold for £4 15s plus commission of 4s 9d. CLASS / A / Enharmonic / Patented / BESSON & CO. This cornet is in good playing condition, comes with leather saddle case and. Inside the case we also found an auction receipt dated 09/11/66 from Escritt & Barrell, chartered auctioneers and estate agents in Grantham. Prototype cornet, Class A New Creation with engraving. The case alone has generated much conversation and been greatly admired since it was donated to our organisation. It has a separate pocket inside the lid for the mouthpiece. The straps that would have buckled the case closed have worn away & the handle is broken, however the long shoulder carrying strap is still intact. The plot follows H, a cold and mysterious character working at a cash truck company responsible for moving hundreds of millions of dollars around Los. The instrument is stored inside an unusual hard leather case which is contoured to the shape of the instrument. Due to it's age the instruments is obviously well loved & well used - some of the silver plating has worn off some of the tubing - consistent with being carried in a band and there are a few dents (the most servere is shown in photo 6) but these don't impact on the sound but just add character to the instrument. This was apparently common for instruments of the age which would have been used in a marching band.

It features serial number 89453 which appears to date it around 1909. Other names that Mary uses includes Mary A Besson and Mary Alyce Besson. Mary Besson currently lives in Arvada, CO in the past Mary has also lived in Sioux Falls SD and Highlands Ranch CO. This euphonium is silver plated with probably gold plating on the inside of the horn. Mary Besson was born on and is 52 years old. His services to music and brass bands was recognised in 1955 with the award of MBE.Beautiful vintage Besson & Co Class A "Prototype" small 4 valve Euphonium in a contoured hard leather felt lined case. Bobbie was associated with the brass bands at Balgownie, Wollongong, Port Kembla and Kiama. In the 1920s and 1930s, he played in the Corrimal Brass Band. Winner of over 60 prizes won in competitions in many parts of Australia. The serial number is 105184 which dates this to. I bought it off the internet when it was very badly tarnished but I could tell that the engraving was special and I suspected from the color that this was gold plated.
He was an outstanding solo cornet player in Australia. Here is an incredibly engraved Trumpet made by Besson & Co. Owned and used by Robert Arthur Vivian Grant (Bobbie) who was born in Hobart in 1883 and who died in 1971.
